Tempe Terra is a heavily fractured highland on the northern edge of the Tharsis region, cut by long grabens of the Tempe Fossae and dotted with small volcanic vents. It records a complex history of tectonic stretching, faulting and localized eruptions.

Long parallel grabens — the Tempe Fossae — slice across the highland where blocks of ground dropped between faults as the surface stretched. In places these rifts expose deep layers and are flanked by small volcanic constructs, a rare combination of tectonics and eruption in one region.
The terrain also preserves some of Mars' old magnetic memory and ancient impact craters softened by later resurfacing. Studying Tempe Terra helps geologists read how Tharsis loaded and flexed the planet's crust over billions of years. It is one of the most structurally complex highlands on Mars.
