Promethei Terra

Ancient southern highland where glaciers still hide beneath the craters.

Promethei Terra is a rugged, heavily cratered highland bordering Mars' south polar region. It is rich in glacial landforms — flow features, lobate debris aprons and buried ice — that record repeated ice ages driven by Mars' wobbling tilt.

The story

How Promethei Terra came to be

Promethei Terra is old, high and cold. Its ancient cratered crust bears the marks of ice on the move: lobate debris aprons creeping from crater walls, softened valleys and flow textures that betray glaciers buried under a protective layer of dust and rock. Much of this ice is thought to survive today, frozen in place.

These glaciers did not form all at once. As Mars' axial tilt swung over millions of years, ice migrated between the poles and the mid-latitudes, advancing and retreating like a slow tide. Promethei Terra preserves that rhythm in its landscape, making it a natural archive of Martian ice ages near the southern cap.

What does the name mean?
Promethei recalls Prometheus, the Titan of Greek myth who stole fire and gave it to humankind.
Why does it have glaciers?
Shifts in Mars' axial tilt drove ice between the poles and mid-latitudes over time, depositing glaciers across highlands like Promethei Terra.
Can I own a plot here?
Yes. MARNYL offers a novelty plot in this icy southern highland with a personalized certificate.
