The equatorial volcano eyed as a gateway to orbit.
Pavonis Mons is the middle of the three great Tharsis Montes volcanoes, and it straddles the Martian equator almost exactly — its summit sits at latitude ~1°N. That equatorial position, combined with its towering height, makes its peak a favourite proposed anchor point for a future Mars space elevator.

Pavonis Mons fits that requirement beautifully: it sits on the equator and already rises about 14 km, giving any elevator a head start above much of the thin atmosphere and dust.
Mars is a far more practical place for a space elevator than Earth — its lower gravity and shorter areostationary altitude ease the immense demands on the cable. That is why Pavonis, unremarkable next to its giant neighbour Olympus Mons, keeps appearing in engineering studies as Mars's most plausible gateway to orbit.
At ~14 km it is dwarfed by Olympus's 21.9 km, but its equatorial spot gives it a unique advantage.
Mars's weaker gravity makes a space elevator here far more feasible than the still-impossible Earth version.
